The Archbishop of Canterbury is facing severe criticism for his remarks about accommodating Sharia Law in the UK. Contrary to popular belief he has not called for changes to the law, but I still disagree strongly with his position.

Archbishop of Canterbury roundly ctriticised
The Archbishop of Canterbury’s suggestion that Sharia Law be enshrined in UK law is roundly criticised by politicians, demonstrating that the UK really is a secular nation.
The Archbishop of Canterbury supports Sharia Law in the UK
Dr Williams suggests that we must appease the UK Muslim community by enacting aspects of Sharia Law. I disagree strongly, and suspect that not only would it satisfy no-one, but would give the most intractably barbaric fundamentalists a platform from which to push for adoption of their more extreme laws.
Goverment about to take action on broadband advertising
It looks like we might finally get someĀ movementĀ on broadband advertising in the UK. Ofcom, the telecoms watchdog, has made it clear that they consider many broadband adverts misleading, and they want to see changes next year. This is great news, as far as it goes, but I can’t help noticing that they seem to be… Read more »
If you’re British, please sign this petition
The recent ordeal (which I’ve blogged about here and here,) of a young woman who was sentenced to state-sponsored brutality after being gang-raped is just one example of the shocking barbarity of the Saudi regime. It is unacceptable that the UK counts any nation with such a poor human-rights record as an ally, so please… Read more »
Saudi rape victim has her punishment increased
Last year I blogged about a Saudi woman who’d been gang raped, and then charged by the authorities for being in the same car as a male friend who was not her husband (before the rape.) Initially, she was sentenced to 90 lashes (yes, corporal punishment.) She appealed that sentence (as well as the lenient… This is an interesting case. The family of a woman who died after being bitten while handling a rattlesnake during a religious service have sued the hospital she was taken to for failing to correctly treat her. They claim After being taken into the hospital at 8:09 p.m., Long said she was having trouble breathing,… Read more »Dead snake-handler’s family sues hospital
Verizon fined $1,000,000 for misleading broadband advertising
I wrote, last week, about the state of broadband advertising in the UK. Well, it looks like it’s not much better in the States, although over there, at least, companies are being called to account for their lies. Ars is reporting that Verizon has been slapped with a pretty hefty fine for their not-so-unlimited broadband… Read more »
The appalling lies of broadband advertising
I’m glad to see that ofcom — the telecoms regulator in the UK — had started to ask broadband providers about their misleading advertising, I just don’t think they’re going nearly far enough. They’re asking the companies to think about ways they can better inform customers about the bandwidth they’re likely to get. Well, I… Read more »
No ID, please: we’re British
The UK government has issued guidelines to science teachers, detailing what they should teach about ID and other forms of creationism. The answer, thankfully, is: “pretty much nothing.” Well, except possibly to point out that it’s not science. Now all we need them to do is get rid of the faith schools, and we’ll be… Read more »
