Saudi rape victim has her punishment increased

Posted & filed under Uncategorized.

Last year I blogged about a Saudi woman who’d been gang raped, and then charged by the authorities for being in the same car as a male friend who was not her husband (before the rape.) Initially, she was sentenced to 90 lashes (yes, corporal punishment.) She appealed that sentence (as well as the lenient…

Insane school rules

Posted & filed under Uncategorized.

A couple of years ago, during the Kitzmiller vs Dover area School District case, I was pretty shocked by the behaviour of some members of the board that had tried to force ID into the science classroom. I’m starting to wonder if that was a special case, or if the whole purpose of school boards… Read more »

28 days was already too long

Posted & filed under Uncategorized.

So, the British government wants to extend the length of time they’re allowed to hold terror suspects without charge from 28 to “about 50″ days. When questioned, the Security Minister, Lord West, acknowledged that a previous attempt to increase the limit to 90 days was “far too long”. Apparently we’re to believe that three months… Read more »

Bigotry is alive and well and living in the White House

Posted & filed under Uncategorized.

The White House has indicated that the president is likely to use his veto to block legislation outlawing employment discrimination based on sexual preference, because — get this — it would infringe the religious freedoms of employers, and thus be unconstitutional. If you’re thinking that argument sounds familiar, it is. It’s the exact same argument… Read more »

I think our corporate firewall is insane

Posted & filed under Uncategorized.

While writing that last post, I found that the corporate firewall here at my employer prevented me uploading the image if I called it “monser.jpg”, but not if I called it “bath.jpg”. I’m honestly starting to think that all it does to determine whether we’re allowed to view a site is generate a hash of… Read more »

Illegal books

Posted & filed under Uncategorized.

Yes, you read that right. In the UK is now officially illegal to own the wrong book. A teenager — who may or may not have terrorist sympathies, I don’t think it’s really relevant — has been arrested, tried, and found guilty, not for anything he’s done, or even for anything he’s planned to do,… Read more »

Stop telling me what to do with my stuff!

So, it looks like the upcoming firmware upgrade turns unlocked iPhones into bricks. Well, that’s the risk you take when you install unauthorised patches to a device’s firmware; it’s always a dangerous thing to do, and you can’t really expect Apple to pick up the pieces for you when it goes wrong. What does really… Read more »

Taslima Nasreen, a Bangladeshi author is to be tried in India because a group of Muslims attacked her and called for her execution. What was her crime? Writing books that out the systematic horrors inflicted on Women, and people of other religions under Sharia law. Apparently that “offended” Muslims, which is punishable by up to… Read more »

On George W Bush

I have been called a lot of things, but never a great Satan. I wish the Iranian people well and only hope their experience with an inept, rigid ideologue president goes better than ours. – Oliver Stone

USA imposes its law on Australian citizen

Posted & filed under Uncategorized.

This is an interesting one. An Australian man, who’s never set foot in the US, and who’s infringing activities all occurred within Australia has been extradited to face trial for intellectual property theft (that is, software piracy) in the US – and has, actually, already plead guilty. It’s interesting because while the man has clearly… Read more »
